Hello.
Jon Klassen is a master at creating books that allow the reader to use their inferring skills as well as imagination to work out what the main characters are thinking.
In The rock from the sky we meet a turtle who just loves his favourite spot and never ever wants to move. The words are simple but the illustrations and the use of eye movement help the readers to think about how the turtle feels about his favourite spot and also the other characters that question him about his reasoning behind why his spot is the best.
The story continues using the rock as the main centrepiece through 5 chapters about being stubborn, embarrassment, imagination and friendship.
It’s fun and a great learning tool for teachers to build up students skills of inferring – grabbing clues from the text and the illustrations to give us more meaning, rather than always relying on what the author is telling us
