Georgia Ward Fear: Reptile biologist and explorer. Written by Claire Saxby. Published by Wild Dingo Press.

Animals belonged in their own homes, just as much as she belonged in hers. She had no idea what she would do when she grew up, but she hoped she could always spend time here in the bush watching animals in their natural environment.

Wild Dingo Press have created three great books as part of a new series called Aussie STEM stars and the third one up on my blog is: Georgia Ward-Fear. Reptile Biologist ad explorer.

This Aussie STEM stars book has been written by Claire Saxby.

We first Meet Georgia Ward-Fear as a young girl who lives in the Blue Mountains not far from Sydney, always exploring the bush and caring for any injured animals. The family live in Leura but have a holiday house in a place called Hamptons which they soon have to live in due to her father losing his job at the iconic Australia’s Wonderland and not being able to keep two houses.

Georgia loves her house at the Hamptons as it is surrounded by bushland and animals but she loathes the extra travel time to school along with the loss of being able to hang out with her friends.

Children will read that Georgia always strived to do her best despite not being happy with her situation in her early years. They will also see that she constantly worked towards her dream of working in the field of science.

Readers will walk alongside Georgia as she travels the world, learning more about herself and the animals within it and seeing that sometimes a bit of thinking time can help us make big decisions..

Not only will readers learn about Georgia and the marvellous work she has done in the field of animal science and especially in helping animals affected by Cane Toads, they will also see that by putting yourself out there, volunteering and thinking about how to reach your next goal is so important.

Georgia is making a huge impact on the animal world by helping groups that once worked alone to work together with an amazing difference in the outcomes.

An inspiring book for readers aged 10-13!

Aussie STEM Stars is a fresh and unique series for children and young teens aged 10-13 years that focuses on our Australian STEM heroes. Each book is written by an award-winning children’s author and follows the real-life stories of Australia’s top scientists and inventors, chosen on the basis of their pioneering work. Themes explored in the series include childhood, school, family and formative experiences, what inspired them to pursue their chosen path, how they persevered in the face of challenges and what they have contributed to science in Australia.

Reason for studying this book

Wild Dingo Press publisher Catherine Lewis is excited about their publication. “These disciplines are more important than ever as we look to our inventors and innovators to solve contemporary problems facing humanity and the planet. Our Aussie STEM Stars series uses narrative non-fiction as a tool for educating children – making it as fun and interesting as fiction books in this market. Our writers are passionate about doing justice to their chosen subjects – and their lives – providing teachers, parents and librarians a wonderful series aimed at encouraging children to develop an interest in STEM at a young age.”
